Calling all artists! I'm holding a concept art contest for my upcoming graphic novel, tentatively titled "Guardians".


Categories will be judged together.

Guardians takes place in a fantasy universe where instead of people becoming the dominant species, four-legged animals have (people do not exist). They have houses, limited clothing, jewelry, social systems, religions, and low technology that mostly revolves around their abilities as elementals. No, they can't fly into space or use guns, it's not sci-fi.


Any one or more of the following:
Buildings
Weapons (spiked arm bands, collars, flinging weapons, ect)
Apparel (gauntlets, armor, sashes, minimal clothing, ect)
Backgrounds are allowed also.

Remember, these are FOUR LEGGED CREATURES. Cats are the dominant species (the wolves have their own culture). Weapons, Buildings, and Apparel should reflect use by an animal that has no hands.

I am narrowing the concepts to only 2 types: Gelgen, the small
mountainous asian-style culture populated by fighting monks and scholars -

and Syrullia - a jerusalem/rome/persian type culture, the main city/nation. Although there are no direct comparisions I can make, for the building types, think something similar to HBO's ROME or Assassin's Creed (but please do not copy this! It's only a reference point so you understand what I mean!)


PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE!!

You may submit any number of ideas as you please.

Submissions will NOT be judged based on the skill level of the artist or how "finished" the piece looks. It will be judged based on the quality and originality of ideas and how well they fit in the Guardians universe.

All submissions must be linked at the bottom of this journal to count. I will then add each one to a gallery in my favourites titled "Guardians Concept Art". If I do not add your submission within (7) days OR (2) days before the contest end date, you may contact me by note. Please do not note me otherwise.

Sketches must be CLEAR (rough is okay, as long as the idea comes across smoothly), and can be submitted with or without colour. Colour dabbed on/underneath the sketch is also acceptable as long as the image is CLEAR. I can't judge something I can hardly see.

"Finished" pieces that take longer than an hour or two are acceptable (and great) but will be discouraged in favour of easier concept art. If you feel inspired to complete a sketch into a finished look, by all means do so! I would love to see! (but this will not earn more judging points)

If you enter, I retain the right to purchace your submitted concept/art for an agreed on price (not to exceed the price of the grand prize) and once purchaced, to retain all publishing rights to that piece. (Ie you can still draw it if you want, but the piece, jewelry or other item, will remain exclusive to Guardians in published works, so please do not submit something that you wish to use yourself! Make up something new!) If you win, the same stipulations will apply.




The Grand Prize winner will recieve
1 sketch/ink/simple colour picture of a character (IF you have references)
The winning concept included somewhere in the Guardians Issue
AND
the choice of ONE of the following prize packages:


One stuffed cuddlekins animal (30") or stuffed animal of equal value (or less if the winner's choice deems so).
